Meniere’s disease and vertigo

Meniere’s disease is a chronic inner ear disorder that affects balance and hearing. It is characterized by episodes of vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the affected ear. These symptoms result from abnormal fluid buildup in the inner ear, specifically in the labyrinth, which affects both balance and hearing functions.

The vertigo associated with Meniere’s disease can be severe, lasting from 20 minutes to several hours, and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Unlike benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), the episodes in Meniere’s disease are unpredictable and often longer-lasting. Recurrent episodes of vertigo and hearing loss can lead to permanent hearing damage over time.

There is no cure for Meniere’s disease, but symptoms can often be managed through lifestyle changes (such as reducing salt intake), medications (to reduce fluid retention or control vertigo), and in severe cases, surgical interventions.
